Subject: [BOARD] MOTION 2011/12-09 Update to the SC Guidelines re:
Unresponsive State Coordinators
Presented by Pat Asher and seconded by Jeff Kemp and dated 22 December 2011,
the motion reads:
"I move the following paragraph be added to "Volunteer and Web Site
Standards/Guidelines" (http://usgenweb.org/volunteers/guidelines.shtml)
under "Required for SCs & ASCs ...": State Coordinators are required to
notify the Election Committee of all changes to the State membership list on
a continuing or quarterly basis, and respond promptly to any special
requests for information from the Election Committee and/or Advisory Board
members.
Is there any discussion on this?  If not, please respond with "no
discussion".

Ya know.... sometimes I wish I knew how to hack a website or a domain. AKGenWeb would be the first on a list !!
Vikki has opened a can of worms, giving ideas that could ultimately cause a land grab on both sides -- not the kind of crap we need to start happening. It'll certainly keep me from doing all this work only to have it lifted. I see now that we need to come up with a way to secure our data.

Geez STP - you need to lighten up. I was making a point that what is good for the goose is good for the gander. You don't know me well enough to say that I am "revealing myself". Actually I'm a pretty nice person. And my point still stands. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. I'll let you hang out with the Robbers Roost Gang and we can start a new USGW group call the ROBIN HOOD GANG. And we can just steal stuff back and forth endlessly and nobody would ever do a transcription cuz it would get stolen by the ROBBERS ROOST GANG and then retrieved by the ROBIN HOOD GANG, and so on and so forth......
We could have alot of fun doing this - kind of like paintball or something.

Vikki,
You're revealing yourself to be what you really are. Elmore site referred to in earlier messages to this list is NOT copyrightable at all, not by you.
I agree with Pat Asher about the transcriptions. I read the Feist vs Bell case. The courts are very clear on facts and also another case (can't recall the name of that particular case), the transcriptions are not copyrightable if it is just all extractions from public domain records. The only portion that is copyrightable is the creation of your own index as well as the notes added by the transcriber. Nothing more.
Bottom line, the transcriptions you make from public domain books (including those with expired copyrights) are NOT copyrightable at all. Whereas the gravestones sites - hands off. They're completely copyrighted by the site owners and the submitters and even the programmers. This covers Findagrave, too. Only the submitters can give permission to copy over to another site. If the contact info on those photos are not visible, you still can _NOT_ copy. STP

Sorry Pat but I don't agree. As much as I respect you - you are wrong on this. Dead wrong. A transcription is not a copy of a pre-existing work. That would be a xerox copy. Transcribers make errors and interpretations of old handwriting. They type dates wrong sometimes. They might only make a partial transcription. Or they might transcribe something and then add other material to it. They might know that a record is incorrect and take the liberty of correcting it.
But on the flip side - if you are right - THEN YOU ARE SAYING WE CAN GO COPY EVERYTHING ON TRAILS AND ON COLORADO GRAVESTONES, AND ON ARIZONA GRAVESTONES! This could be really fun. We can go steal everything that's not nailed down, change the background color and put it on GenWeb! This is way cool!! We can all join Robbers Roost!
Of course the only problem is that Trails has no original work cuz it appears to be mostly lifted from GenWeb....... But it is an interesting concept!
